Avebury Area
Location

After a week of being relatively cooped up I went on a tremendous 15 mile walk today (the approximate route was in the latest "TGO Magazine"). I got the bus to Avebury and from there headed up and over the Ridgeway to descend through Fyfield Down. Crossing the A4 and the hamlet of Fyfield I reached West Woods to go through mainly in a SSE direction to then try and pick up the Wansdyke Trail. I went slightly wrong here and, while on the Wansdyke itself, found it very overgrown at one stage donning waterproof trousers over my shorts to get through the nettles! Once the Wansdyke became clearer I followed it for a short while but chose the White Horse Trail to descend eventually to the A4 by Silbury Hill and from there to Avebury.

On the way I noticed a large flock of Lesser Black Backed Gulls in a field off the first Berwick Bassett bend and the first Buzzard of many.

Climbing out of Avebury there were plenty of Swallows and Jackdaws and a House Martin was still visiting the nest. Also House Sparrows and Pied Wagtails at the last farm. Further up the first of 2 Wheatears with the other being seen on Fyfield Down. On the Down itself I saw Chaffinch, several "charms" of Goldfinches, Linnets, a Pheasant, the first of several Mistle Thrushes seen on the walk (probably the most I have seen in a single day), Green Woodpecker, Magpies, Carrion Crows, 5 Grey Partridges, a Kestrel.

I stopped for a coffee at 136705. From the trees to the East was a bird of prey calling - more scratchy than a Buzzard's mew. When it took off I saw a distinctive white ring at the top of the tail but when it came over gliding I lost confidence and thought Buzzard. But having checked the fieldguides this evening I am sure it was a ringtail, but as to what harrier species, well who knows

Just before leaving Fyfield Down (a magical place!) a heard a "huit" and thought Chiffchaff or Chaffinch but got a good view of the bird on the fence - a female Common Redstart. Later it flew off and I got a great view of the rufus tail to confirm. Also in vicinity a crowd of c80 Rooks.

Either side of the A4 Greenfinch, Robin and Red Kite were added to this impressive list as were Jay, Blue Tit and Great Tit in the forest while Treecreepers were heard.

I had lunch on a log on the edge of a field on from West Woods and seemed to be surrounded by Mistle Thrushes and saw 2 Ravens.

Not long until the next highlight as around the site of the medieval village of Shaw I was delighted to find a family of Spotted Flycatchers. I counted four with evidence of breeding being a youngster being fed.

Once on the Wansdyke proper I had my first Meadow Pipit of the day. Then time, weather and rather prairie landscape made me push on a bit adding only 2 Stock Doves. However by East Kennett more Spotted Flycatchers! There was another Kestrel and Red Kite over the A4 and Red legged Partridge was the last addition to the list.

In the field near Silbury Hill there were "old fashioned" numbers of Swallows and House Martins - delightful.

So a very pleasing list of birds seen.

Butterflies seen were: Small White, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, Small Copper, Common Blue, Meadow Brown, Red Admiral, Speckled Wood, Large White.

Notable insect: Brown Hawker

Mammals: Grey Squirrel, Weasel (in the yard of a vehicle workshop where I crossed the A4 into Fyfield).

A great day out!
