From Twitchers Gate: 1 possibly 2 Avocets, 4 Black-tailed Godwits, Red-necked Grebe, c60 Lapwings, Cetti's Warbler singing and Blackcap.

The first sighting of the Avocet was of a bird over the scrape that soared to a considerable height then descended down behind the heronry. It wasn't seen to return to the scrape. A few minutes later another bird or the same flew up briefly with the other waders then down again onto the scrape.

Having stayed up to see the Lunar Eclipse in the early hours of this morning, with clear skies, it was a bit of a shock to wake up later, to see thick fog.  Fortunately it lifted fairly quickly, to allow me to watch 2 Siskins fly over the house heading north and a handful of Meadow Pipits heading in the opposite direction. Also about was a Goldcrest feeding in the neighbours Leylandii. Blood Moon Images Here.

Had the delight of 6 Long-tailed Tits lingering in the garden today.

Marlborough Downs

The day started with a Starling flying round the living room covered in soot having fallen down the chimney from its perch (to have a good view of the blood moon no doubt). It eventually allowed itself to be caught and flew away none the worse for its experience.

We then set off in the fog which fortunately had cleared into a beautiful sunny day by the time we arrived in Avebury.

Our first sighting was a Red Kite over Wroughton Airfield seen from the bus.

Amongst the birds around the Manor Garden were 2 Chiffchaffs & a Buzzard over. Also Red Admiral, Comma & Small Tortoiseshell Butterflies feeding on Sedums.

On the walk from Avebury to Marlborough across Fyfield Down there were 4 Goldfinch, 3 Meadow Pipits, 3 Buzzards, a Red Kite, a Sparrowhawk, a Kestrel, a Jay, 38 Lapwing, 2 Ravens & large mixed flocks of corvids.

We then returned along the rail path as far as Chiseldon and saw even fewer birds. Only corvids & Lesser Black-backed Gulls on the recently cultivated fields.

Eysey
Location

I visited Eysey this afternoon and enjoyed a pleasant and peaceful time enjoying the wildlife. On the water 5 Little Egrets, one Egyptian Goose, several Greylag and Canada Geese (no orange collars), 5 Mute Swans (all adult), 2 Cormorants, c25 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 1 Grey Heron, a pair of Great Crested Grebes, Mallards.

Around the area a Kestrel, a family group of Long-tailed Tits, Great Tits, Blue Tits, 2 Chiffchaffs, a Yellowhammer.

Across the lane by the new workings I was very pleased to see a Hare on the flat sand plus a good selection of butterflies: 6 Small Whites, 2 Small Tortoiseshells, a Red Admiral, a Common Blue and a Painted Lady. (as seen on Twitter!)

I then went just over the border to Kempsford, Gloucestershire and walked around the workings: another Yellowhammer, a flock of Linnets (c30) in a field and a similar sized flock of Goldfinches, and a nice view of a male Blackcap. Not much in the excavations but another Grey Heron.
