2 Buzzards (one in regular spot), Kestrel, 250 Fieldfare/Redwings over, 2 Jays, 4 Wrens, 3 Robins, Bullfinch, 2 Mallards and a Moorhen. A Kingfisher was the provisional highlight, until I flushed, after initially walking right past it, a Short-eared Owl, roosting on the ground right next to the river. I watched it fly low for about 100 yards before coming to rest in the long grass.

I'm glad I ran my trap for the first time in over 2 weeks. 7 species, 11 moths! I also caught a Dark Sword-grass which means there must have been quite a movement (a bit of a bold statement from such a small sample I know). Also trapped were 5 Light Brown Apple Moths, my first December Moth of the year, a Winter Moth, an Acleris sparsana, a mint Red-green Carpet and a Phyllonorycter messaniella!

Not something you see everyday, this Sparrowhawk has worked it out that it can catch its meal by making its way through the leylandii looking for unsuspecting prey. On this ocassion it failed as the House Sparrows were always one step ahead.(Martin Adlam)

We're getting a few more winter ducks now, and one we don't see a lot of at Coate was a Goldeneye, which was out in the middle of the lake. There were a few more Pochard about with 4 males, also Wigeon, Tufted Duck, Gadwall and a lot of Teal. There were 4 Snipe seen from Hide 2, where there were also a Goldcrest, Treecreeper, a Great Spotted Woodpecker on the feeders and a pair of Jays taking the nuts. There are also up to 5 Goosander with 3 males and 2 females.

First thing this morning 80+ Redwing heading south-east over the estate. A brisk walk around the block later, was quite rewarding with a Lesser Redpoll overhead, a pair of Greenfinch in a neighbours tree and around Nythe Pool there were Goldcrest, Blue Tits and a Great Tits moving through in a small flock.

This evening in the Barbury Castle area I recorded: 1 Buzzard, 1 Merlin, 1 Kestrel, 10+ Pheasant, a Red-legged Partridge heard, several Golden Plover heard, 10 Black-headed Gull, 3 Herring Gull, 9 Lesser Black-backed Gull, Wood Pigeon, 2 Pied Wagtail, Blackbird, 50+ Fieldfare, 10+ Redwing, Goldcrest, Long-tailed Tits, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Wrens, 2 Magpie, Rook, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, Starling, Chaffinch and 2 Bullfinch. Also 2 Roe Deer in the fields close-by.

No sign of any Short-eared Owls, but well pleased with watching a Merlin skimming over the hills and fields.
