In and Around Swindon

At Wichelstowe this morning the first bird I saw on the lake was a Cormorant and the second was a Kingfisher which is a patch tick.  A Sparrowhawk also made an appearance.  On the water, in addition to the Cormorant were: 41 Black Headed Gulls, 32 Mallard, 4 each of Canada Goose, Tufted Duck, Coot and Moorhen. 1 grey Heron that was dive bombed by a Black Headed Gull for no real reason - it had no food that I could see.

Flyby's were interesting as they included 1 Mute Swan and 6 more Cormorants in squadron.  I think 2 landed at Wichelstowe (this was when I had returned to the car),3 headed towards Coate and 1 went I know not where.

At the Otterborne funeral I swear a Red Admiral flew by in the graveyard!

I drove back across country (Ludgershall, Savernake Forest, Marlborough, Rockley).  Just before Hackpen a Buzzard flew right across me.

Then this afternoon at the main South Leaze lake: 4 Mallard, 2 Coot, 1 Moorhen

Of more interest was the Goldcrest, Buzzard, the 3 Meadow Pipits I sent up when walking along the (boggy) green sward and a Kestrel perched right opposite Waitrose.

At the newer westerly lake, while the species breadth may not seem exciting, it is good to see it getting more colonised with: 6 Tufted Ducks (4 male, 2 female), 4 Mallards, 2 Coot, 1 Moorhen.

Cotswold Water Park

We had a walk today in the Cotswold Water Park taking advantage of the sunshine, although not officially spring it certainly had that feel about it. Highlights were the huge number of wildfowl still wintering on CWP Pit 74, particularly Wigeon, along with good numbers of Pintail & Shoveler. Also on 74 were 2 Shelduck, 2 Little Egrets, a few Goldeneye and a Curlew. The Smew are still around, today we saw 3 on CWP Pit 30, 2 males & a female. We saw our first Green Woodpeckers of the year at CWP Pit 29 & Ashton Keynes and there were a pair of Stonechats at CWP Pit 95. Details of the lakes we visited and the birds seen can be found on the CWP blog here.

There was plenty of activity both in the woods and on the lake. At one time I had 3 Jays in the area, 2 males and a female. I was able to snap one of these up close just before the 2 males were involved in a tremendous scrap, after which all 3 vanished. There were the usual Robins, finches, tits and Chaffinches and I was sorry to see the female was infected with that horrible leg fungus. Not the first I have seen in the woods.
