2 Magpie
2 Wren

Coate Water

I walked around the back of Coate this afternoon in the rain.  I was interested to see how it looked with the lower level of water: interesting to see all the eaten Swan Mussels.

The highlight was a bit of luring along the lane with some seed placed on one of the roadside posts, as when I tried this last January it quickly gave me a Marsh Tit.  I also tried some seed on one of the benches around the back, saw nothing, but when I returned the seed had gone.  I tried some more but again nothing and it was getting rather dusky by then.

List of species seen: Mute Swan, Canada Goose (c20 flew in late on), Wigeon, Gadwall, Teal (4 flying towards the second hide area), Mallard, Shoveler (a lot!), Pochard, Tufted Duck, Pheasant (a year tick!), Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Grey Heron, Cormorant, Buzzard, Moorhen, Coot, Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Wood Pigeon, Magpie, Jay, Jackdaw, Rook, Carrion Crow, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Marsh Tit (year tick), Long-tailed Tit, Blackbird, Robin, Grey Wagtail and Chaffinch.  (33)

A very tame Blackbird greets me most mornings and doesn't flinch as I, noisily, get my bike ready for work. I even cleaned my motorbike at the weekend just a couple of feet away from it and the whole time it carried on feeding! I've been getting a little bit of faint sub-song recently too.

Also this morning, 5 Greenfinches, 2 Goldfinches, House Sparrow and 2 Robins - which are also getting more and more confiding.

Main highlight was a Little Egret seen feeding in Nythe Pool, sadly in amongst all the rubbish, which hopefully the Environment Agency will be dealing with soon!

Also all the Blue Tits seem to be pairing up and there was that a feeling that Spring was just around the corner. Other highlights were the Grey Heron sat on his favourite branch in the Oak tree, a Pied Wagtail on and off the path around the pool area, both Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers calling from Nythe Wood and just the one Common Gull today, the 2nd-Winter over the estate.

Birds recorded were: 1 Little Egret, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Moorhen, 3 Black-headed Gull, 2 Herring Gull, 1 2nd-winter Common Gull, Wood Pigeon, Green Woodpecker heard, Great Spotted Woodpecker heard, 1 Pied Wagtail, Dunnock, Robin, Blackbird, Song Thrush singing, Goldcrest, Long-tailed Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit, 1 Treecreeper, Wren, 20+ Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, 21 Starling, House Sparrow, Chaffinch and 2 Siskin.

Liddington, Chiseldon and Coate Water

After treating ourselves to a breakfast at the Three Trees Cafe in Chiseldon we headed for Liddington Hill seeing Long-tailed Tits, Linnets, Chaffinches, Fieldfares, Redwings & a Kestrel around the Folly Farm area. At least 3 Red Kites were constantly on the move over the hill, at one stage joined by a Buzzard. As we continued our circular walk we saw more Fieldfares, 3 pairs of Stonechat & 3 Roe Deer.

We returned home via Chiseldon & Coate Water. A Jay was in the trees along the Washpool at Chiseldon. We arrived at Coate as the light was fading and had a quick look from the hides at a largely frozen lake. Birds seen included Mute Swans, Cormorants, Grey Herons, Gadwall, Shoveler, Teal, Moorhen & Coot. A Water Rail, a Treecreeper & Long-tailed Tits were among the birds seen around the feeders.
Also seen were 2 Roe Deer & a Grey Squirrel. The main lake added Pochard, Tufted Duck & Canada Geese to the day list.

A beautiful day up on the hill although a bit cold walking home at dusk.
